Alice Eve Apologizes for Comments About Bruce Jenner

Star Trek Into Darkness actress Alice Eve has apologized for saying that Bruce Jenner is "playing a woman," in the wake of Jenner coming out as transgender on 20/20.

In an Instagram post, which has since been deleted, Eve wrote: "If you were a woman no one would have heard of you because women can't compete in the decathlon. You would be a frustrated young athlete who wasn't given a chance."

Eve was referencing Jenner winning the Decathlon at the 1976 Olympics and attempting to make a point about feminism and equal pay. "Until women are paid the same as men, then playing at being a 'woman' while retaining the benefits of being a man is unfair," she wrote. "Do you have a vagina? Are you paid less than men? Then, my friend, you are a woman."

On Tuesday, after coming under fire on social media, Eve issued a statement of apology. ""I deeply apologize for offending anyone," she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "I support equal rights and equal dignity for all. I have deep compassion and support for Bruce Jenner. My intention was not to offend. My intention was simply to express that, with the overdue and welcome acceptance of us all living on a gender spectrum, we must encourage equality for all."

Eve has also backpedaled on social media, deleting her original post and putting up a new one:

She also engaged with commenters on another photo, thanking them for "engaging" with her and writing: "I am saying that we have to refine the language on this topic so all men, women and transgenders are accurately represented in their process of self-identification. Maybe this needs a little thought. ... I felt confused and now I feel enlightened and like I know what education I need to move forward. I appreciate the time and thought." The remarks, as reported by EW, have since been deleted.
