One Day at a Time Star Pat Harrington Jr. Dead at 86

Harrington won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing superintendent Dwayne Schneider

Actor Pat Harrington Jr., best known for playing building superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the sitcom One Day at a Time, died Wednesday night in Los Angeles surrounded by his family. He was 86.

Harrington's biggest role was on One Day at a Time, which ran from 1975 to 1984. He won a Golden Globe in 1981 and an Emmy in 1984 for his performance as Dwayne Schneider, the scene-stealing superintendent of the building where Bonnie Franklin's, Mackenzie Phillips' and Valerie Bertinelli's characters lived. He also appeared on The Beverly Hillbillies, The Munsters, Murder, She Wrote, and many other shows. His last TV appearance was in a 2012 episode of Bertinielli's show Hot In Cleveland, referencing his One Day at a Time role by playing an apartment building manager.

Harrington had been suffering from Alzheimer's and was recently hospitalized after a fall. He was born on Aug. 13, 1929, in New York City and was a veteran of the Korean War and had a master's degree in political philosophy.
